Jennie Shortridge's latest book is a terrific read. It's the story of Mira Serafino, a 45 year old wife, mother and teacher who's "perfect life" suddenly goes awry. The minute it does, Mira takes off and just drives north until she runs out of money and needs to find a job and a place to live.
We learn her history through flashbacks and come to understand this strong and feisty woman who has demons to face and lessons to learn. The ending is hopeful but not pat, satisfying without being saccharine.
Yes, I know you're sure you've heard this story before, but this time it's unpredictable, funny, sad and above all true to life. I could really empathize with Mira's plight and applaud her gutsy reaction. She's a fascinating character with plenty of flaws who makes many mistakes as she struggles to come to terms with her true self and an imperfect world.
Ms. Shortridge writes with humor and tremendous compassion and avoids easy answers. The cast of characters are fully fleshed out and a fascinating bunch. There's a raucous best friend and former rocker who runs a Yarn and Guitar Shop, a difficult daughter who has fled to a commune, and a big Italian family who expect Mira to bring trays of hand-made cannoli to every party, a lost surfer, a mysterious cafe owner, and many others. Each character is unique and incredibly real. No chance of mixing up who's who as you read.
Love and Biology at the Center of the Universe explores issues facing middle aged women with grace and charm. Shortridge tackles the messy bits, the sadness and regrets, as well as the heady sense of possibility, liberation and the sometimes unwelcome insights that come with age. It's a thought-provoking story that will have you staying up late to read just one more page.

Paula,
I enjoyed this book as well. It is fun to read something when you know the area in which it takes place. I love all of the local references. Did you know that Jennie is going to be the speaker at the eWomenNetwork event in Seattle on September 5th? I am actually going to meet her this Friday, she is coming to my book club.

Hi Paula,
I woke up this morning under grey Seattle skies, but with this ray of sunshine in my Google Alert. Thanks for loving books and for helping other readers find their way to the ones they might like--something that gets a little harder all the time with the media onslaught that is our world. Book bloggers rock!
